Apes, robots and men: The life and death of the first space chimp

Ham experienced fear, per Jane Goodall, as an unwitting, unwilling lab experiment in place of humans. I can't make any moral judgements about that time; however, today I experience a twinge of conscience about using hapless animals as human stand-ins especially for sundry experiments to show the safety of "useless, vain" products like cosmetics. The development of vaccines/medications has a different aspect, but the twinge is still there. Perhaps there is a better less exploitive way? Any comments are appreciated, especially those about mathematical modeling.
