http://www.esa.int : Hylas-1 satellite readied for launch from Europe’s Spaceport
20 October 2010

Hylas-1 landed

The Hylas-1 telecommunications satellite has arrived at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. Its next journey will be to space, on an Ariane 5 launcher towards its operational orbit nearly 36 000 km up.

The Antonov An-124 cargo jetliner bringing Hylas-1 from Bangalore, India, touched down at Rochambeau airport near the capital Cayenne late in the evening of 11 October.

The satellite was then moved by road to the Guiana Space Centre, where it was taken into the S1B satellite preparation facility.

Hylas-1 is now undergoing a final series of health checks before being fuelled, encapsulated within its payload fairing and mated to its Ariane 5 vehicle.

The satellite will be launched on 25 November onboard Ariane flight V198, which will be the fifth of six Ariane 5 launches planned for this year.

This first ‘Highly Adaptable Satellite’ will provide broadband Internet access to consumers and businesses across Europe as well as supporting a range of conventional telecommunications services.

While its advanced communications payload was developed in Europe, Hylas-1’s flight-proven I-2K satellite platform was procured by prime contractor EADS Astrium from Antrix Corporation in India, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The satellite was assembled and tested at ISRO’s facility in Bangalore, before being flown more than halfway round the world to French Guiana.

Hylas-1 is an innovative project in more ways than one: this is the first satellite to be developed through a public–private partnership between ESA and a commercial satellite operator. Avanti Communications of London will own and operate the satellite from its geostationary orbital location of 33.5°W.

Intelsat 17 is loaded in California for its shipment to the Spaceport in French Guiana aboard an Antonov An-124 cargo jetliner (photo at left). It joined HYLAS 1, which is shown at right after the opening of its protective shipping container in one of the Spaceport’s clean room facilities.

October 29, 2010 – Ariane Flight 198

Both satellites for Arianespace’s next heavy-lift Ariane 5 flight – the fifth for this workhorse launcher in 2010 – are undergoing their final checkout for a November 25 liftoff.

The mission will orbit Intelsat 17 for Intelsat of the U.S., along with HYLAS 1 for operation by Avanti Communications in the United Kingdom.

Intelsat 17 will be positioned at 66 deg. East, offering programmers distribution in a region that extends across Asia and into Europe and Africa. Built by Space Systems/Loral, Intelsat 17’s C- and Ku-band capacity will provide multi-continental coverage, and this spacecraft will replace the Intelsat 702 satellite that was launched by Arianespace in June 1994.

The HYLAS 1 spacecraft was designed and built by EADS Astrium for satellite broadband operator Avanti Communications, and will bring high-speed broadband services to remote rural areas across Europe using a highly adaptable payload. Operating in the Ku and Ka bands, the spacecraft is designed to allocate varying amounts of power and bandwidth to the various regions within its footprint, reacting to the highs and lows of traffic demand. The HYLAS 1 platform was provided by Antrix Corporation – the Indian Space Research Organisation’s commercial arm, with satellite assembly and qualification testing performed in Bangalore, India.

Arianespace remains on track for a total of six Ariane 5 flights in 2010. Its most recent was yesterday’s launch, which orbited the W3B and BSAT-3b satellites. It was preceded by three other dual-payload missions: an August 4 flight that orbited RASCOM-QAF 1R and NILESAT 201; the June 26 mission with Arabsat-5A and the COMS spacecraft; and the May 21 launch with ASTRA 3B and COMSATBw-2.

In other 2010 launch activity, an October 20 Soyuz mission performed for Arianespace by its Starsem affiliate lofted the initial six Globalstar second-generation constellation satellites from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

www.arianespace.com : Arianespace’s fifth Ariane 5 is ready to receive its Intelsat 17 and HYLAS 1 satellite payloads
November 8, 2010 – Ariane Flight 198

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace’s fifth heavy-lift mission of 2010 has moved to the Final Assembly Building at the Spaceport in French Guiana, where it will be fitted with a dual-passenger payload of the Intelsat 17 and HYLAS 1 satellites.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace’s November 25 mission approaches its Launcher Integration Building at the Spaceport.

This milestone marks Ariane 5’s formal delivery to Arianespace by industrial prime contractor EADS Astrium Space Transportation, which was responsible for build-up of the launch vehicle’s core cryogenic stage with its two solid boosters and the cryogenic upper stage in the Spaceport’s Launcher Integration Building.

The Ariane 5’s liftoff with Intelsat 17 and HYLAS 1 is set for November 25, and will be the 198th mission of an Ariane family launcher.

Once in orbit, Intelsat 17 will offer distribution in a region that extends across Asia and into Europe and Africa, operating from an orbital positioned of 66 deg. East – effectively located next to Intelsat's successful Asian video distribution neighborhood positioned at 68.5 degrees East. The spacecraft was built by Space Systems/Loral, and carries C- and Ku-band capacity to provide multi-continental coverage. It is to replace the Intelsat 702 satellite, which was launched by Arianespace in June 1994.

HYLAS 1 will bring high-speed broadband services to remote rural areas across Europe using a highly adaptable Ku- and Ka-band payload. Designed and built by EADS Astrium for satellite broadband operator Avanti Communications, this spacecraft is designed to allocate varying amounts of power and bandwidth to the various regions within its footprint, reacting to the highs and lows of traffic demand.

Page last updated: 17 November 2010

by the UK Space Agency

The HYLAS 1 satellite has been fully fuelled and will be integrated with the Ariane 5 launch vehicle tomorrow ahead of the launch on Friday the 26th of November. The launch will be webcast live on the Ariane Space website (link opens in a new window) and will occur in a window between 18.39 and 21.54 Greenwich Mean Time.

The Hylas mission will address the large demand for broadband services in Europe that cannot be met by terrestrial networks. It will provide capacity to serve hundreds of thousands of Internet users, and broadcast up to 30 standard-quality or 15 high-definition TV channels in Ku-band.

HYLAS has been partly funded by the UK Space Agency and is designed and built for Avanti Communications by Astrium UK.
