"1. just throw them a line.

2. If they are too far away for a thrown line then some sort of line deploying gun or rocket could be used, perhaps several together to help ensure a successful snag.

3. A small bank of rockets remotely deployed and even wire guided from inside ISS "

1. A line doesn't act the same way in space. Any snag or once it is completely extended and it will rebound.

2. Who is going to shoot the gun?

3. too many scenerios to be covered by this.

That is the whole reason for the SAFER. No reason to backup the backup

1. A line doesn't act the same way in space. Any snag or once it is completely extended and it will rebound.

Limit snags by having the line on a reel. Maybe one of those pocket sized casting rods could be a standard tool belt item. I see what you mean by the rebound problem. More than one line throwing/deployment method would be needed.

I still like the wire guided rockets. They could already be mounted on the outside of the station, and then someone with a clear view of the victim could do the flying.

fgl

Where are the rockets? The Station is too big to have enough of them. The wires and controls would cause more complexity and would be unwieldy.

And like I said it is not needed. The SAFER is the backup. Dont' need belt and suspenders

It's not like I was thinking that very large rockets would be needed, and I do not believe the fly by wire controls are very complex.

But then as you said: And like I said it is not needed. The SAFER is the backup. Dont' need belt and suspenders

oh well that's what i get for thinking about problems that don't exist.

fgl

"It is the same scenario as a crewman working on the deck of a racing yacht in weather. If you go over, and the harness fails, ...you aren't coming back."

A person I know actually had a similar thing happen to him.
He was working a fishing boat well east of NZ. The baot was manned by this bloke and his Skipper. One night while his kipper was asleep he fell overboard. The boat was on autopilot and keep of sailing off while his shouts didn't raise the skipper. He thought he was a goner. Luck had it after a little while he felt something rub against him. It was a rope to net or longline (can't remember which). He managed to haul himself back up it and eventually back into the boat.

****** that for a job, I'd rather ride a shuttle

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver
