There was a book "Random Acts of Senseless Violence" by Jack Womack that I think would have made a good low budget Indie movie with the right director.

(not related to the similarly named movie "random acts of violence",)

Replying to:

I'd like to see some movies from the Niven universe. Others have mentioned Ringworld and Mote in God's Eye, but I didn't see FootFall mentioned, which I think would be good also. I think what would make a good TV series would be The Man-Kzin Wars. Sort of like Spielberg's Amazing Tales. I don't have any specific Man-Kzin tales in mind, since i'm still trying to find more books, but I bet they would make great stand-alone episodes, loosely intertwined with recurring characters.
Rendezvous with Rama would make for a good film I imagine. There have been rumours for years (and even a website) about David Fincher (se7en, fight club) directing a big screen adaptation of Rama, but nothing has happened so far, sadly.

http://www.cinematical.com/2007/08/24/morgan-freeman-has-a-rendezvous-with-rama/

Morgan Freeman Has A 'Rendezvous with Rama'

by Jessica Barnes Aug 24th 2007 // 7:06PM

While hard at work on graphic novel adaptation Wanted with Angelina Jolie and The Dark Knight, Morgan Freeman spoke with MTV movie blogs about his adaptation of Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke. The story centers on an alien star ship that floats into our solar system and the human team of scientists working to figure out its origin. Freeman is planning to produce and star in the film and has promised that David Fincher will direct. There is no official confirmation on whether Fincher's involvement in the film is just wishful thinking on Freeman's part, but Freeman seems confident that Fincher is on board. Freeman first expressed interest in the project back in 2000, but in 2003 he had spoken with Sci-Fi Wire to speak about the problems he was having with studios, saying "These things, they always want to make it into an action film, You can't do it with this. And we've been having trouble getting someone to see the science aspect of this, the exploratory aspects of it, rather than the blood and guts and stuff".

Four years later, and it doesn't sound like getting the film into production has gotten any easier. Freeman now tells MTV, "It's a very intellectual science fiction film, a very difficult book to translate cinematically. [At least] we have found it very difficult to translate, to get ready for film". Rama was published back in 1972 and won both a Nebula and a Hugo award for science fiction writing. The book was later expanded upon into a series of novels, but Clarke was no longer writing them. Instead, he served as an executive editor for the remaining novels. Freeman still isn't finished with Wanted, and he has already signed to portray Nelson Mandela in a biopic about the legendary human rights leader. But in spite of the delays; persistence has paid off and Rendezvous with Rama is tentatively set for release in 2009.

***

Anne MaCaffrey's, "Dragonriders of Pern" series would be one of my all time favorites, but it could be difficult to film. Given the spate of teenage fatasy at the moment why not do a film on the Harper Hall trilogy, with the dragon riders in the background. For those who have never heard of it, the book covers the training of harpers. In an illiterate world they are the teachers, entertainers, and sometimes spies bringing knolage to the insular Craft holds whom the Dragons protect.

Like the Hobit gives an introduction to Middle Earth, the Harper Hall would introduce Pern to the uninitiated. If it succeeds it could lead to The Dragon Riders of Pern.

Yagurth

Asimov's Foundation Trilogy would make a long, long, long, long tv miniseries. I remember when they did 26 hours of James Michener's Centennial 30 years ago on NBC. Sci Fi channel could do Asimov's robot novels, The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun as four hour movies each. Hmm. I haven't read any sci-fi in 30 years, so I have no idea what's out there today that would be good to film. I always wanted to see a miniseries based on Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, but the premise is by now obsolete. Pity. Blame the microchip. Finally, a shameless plug for an old friend of mine who has a new book out!

Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan

futuristic hardboiled detective story, with a good dose of action, cyberpunk and mind-body transfers to mix things up

The Skinner, and Cowl by Neal Asher

action-packed and fast paced scifi, both would make awesome rides on the big screen. might need some toning down though, as they are violent, brutally and disgustingly so at times.

Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

some of the stories would be great to watch, maybe as 1-hour TV episodes. very imaginative stuff.

The Extinction Journals by Jeremy Robert Johnson

guy survives nuclear holocaust with a suit made of cockroaches ... living cockroaches. hmmm, not for everyone, but would make a good offbeat horror short.

Song of Ice & Fire series by George RR Martin

already taken by HBO for a mini series, hope they dont mess it up too much

The Prince of Nothing trilogy by R. The Rama books would make a great film. But. Spielberg must be kept very far away from production. I would not want to see a Rama action/adventure move. I miss movies that questioned how alien would aliens be compared to humankind. I can't help but have an image of the Rama craft represeted by the craft from the fourth Star Trek movie. That movie started with the mystery of "alien" aliens. Their craft gave no clue about who they were or what they wanted. In those opening sequences the magic of science fiction was alive and well. ...Then mass destruction and the traditional Trek reunion, SF cliche's, and the good guys win! I'm off track now. What I want is a science fiction movie with aliens that I think I have almost figured out, but then something more is revealed and I again question what it is I believe I am seeing. And I want that for an entire movie! Not a thoughtful five minutes crammed between lasers and explosions. I think that the project should be given to a director who knows little of science fiction not one who thinks he wrote the book on it. Rant, rant, rant this is my first post; I had know idea of soapbox danger.
