""...I would not be surprised if there hasn't already been alcohol on board the ISS...."

I would be shocked if there hasn't! "

Yes, there has been vodka on ISS. Unofficially of course. I think there have been some cigarettes as well (definitely on Mir). While I like to relax with a drink now and then, I would be too terrified to drink in space where you have to be ready for more emergencies than we do at home or in a bar drinking.

I would be more worried about the cigarettes causing a fire... although, would they even burn properly?

mmm, maybe if we ban liquor on the ISS somebody else will start a private industry to smuggle vodka to outerspace. Illegal activities have often led to nice innovations, might just work here as well...

Kind of a Buck Rodgers meets Al Capone scene eh? I'm sure the space gangster flicks might be cool. Elliot Spaceness and his Zero-G Men. Yikes!

The Disenfranchised Curmudgeon

http://tonyplank.blogspot.com/

Need some more billionairs in the ISS first, also means that Node 3 can find use as a speak-easy

"According to those cosmonauts, they used to drink vine or brandy onboard space stations, not vodka. And nobody ever lit cigarettes onboard MIR or ISS just because there were no brainless fools. Everyone knew lessons which were given from Apollo 1 accident."

Don't beleive everything you see on TV. I have some of the vodka packets used and have talked to those who have seen smoking on Mir. Keep in mind Apollo1 was pure oxygen while Mir was not.

Right; smoking on the Mir would not have been a serious fire hazard. (Consider that there WERE fires on Mir, and they did not flash through the entire station, but remained localized and could be extinguished without asphyxiating the crew.) I don't think I'd advise cigarettes in space, though. In addition to the established health risks, they will increase the rate of oxygen consumption and increase the demand on the ventilation systems. I'm not sure how confident I am of the system's ability to handle such a dramatic and out-of-spec increase in fine particulates either.

I suppose for those who did light up, it was a calculated risk.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Any pot would have to be in brownie form.
It just wouldn’t be safe with all that smoke.
You can make tea with grass, saves on dealing with the smoke.

i laugh often @ those who think future OuterSpace civilization will be utopian & perfectly ordered.

Who exactly thinks such nonsense?

"Vodka packets? What does it mean? "

Little plastic bags filled with about a shot.

Were the packets you have flown? If so, how irresponsible of the cosmonauts to have wasted valuable upmass by not drinking them!

I am not aware of any being wasted!
