Link in Portuguese:
http://www.marcospontes.net/entrevistas/entrevistas/AEB%20Informa/AEB_concluiu_contrato_voo_MCP.htm

Yes!!!!!
Our Lt.Col. Marcos Pontes (of Brazilian Air Force) will be the first cosmonaut of Brazil. He will be launched on the next Soyuz spacecraft, in march. His mission will last 8 days, during the exchange of main expeditions to the International Space Station.
Pontes has full training at NASA´s space shuttle as mission specialist; and he will undertake Russian training on Soyuz. A fully-trained astronaut, ready to fly as a major participant in the ISS program.
He will carry with him a set of Brazilian microgravity experiments.

Among his curriculum as astronaut candidate and fully-trained astronaut at NASA:

As far as possible I will put a link in English.

I translated from Portuguese to English (in some haste, sorry) his curriculum as it appears in his website:

"QUALIFICATIONS

Master in Engineering of Systems

Analysis, development and test of integrated systems of electromagnetic and óticos sensors.
Aeronautical engineer

Development, analysis, maintenance and test of aircraft and its systems.
Pilot of Tests

Development, execution and analysis of flight tests of aircraft of fixed wing and its systems.

Military Pilot

Preparation and execution of missions of ground attack and aerial superiority.

Officer (agent) of Security of Flight

Development and execution of Programs of Prevention of Air accidents. Strannik,

From Ukraine space agency regarding space cooperation with Brazil:

http://www.nkau.gov.ua/nsau/catalogNEW.nsf/0/2D357C5C6B8786B2C3256BF8004C1C4D?OpenDocument&Lang=E

We have an agreement to launch Tsyklon from Alcantara Range in Northeast (Maranhao State), besides our work in our own VLS solid motor launcher.

A visit to http://www.aeb.gov.br/
is worth. You can use easily the altavista translation web-page Portuguese-English and it gives a fairly nice translation.

An example:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=pt_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fsamba.aeb.gov.br%2fconteudo.php%3fida%3d5%26idc%3d145%26id%3d469

---- will give you a nice view of the agreement. Please forgive the inevitable automatic translation limitations.
Our President´s name is not Luis Inacio *Squid* da Silva, but Luis Inacio *Lula* da Silva, his old political nickname.

"I thought the first Brazilian in space would be some rich model. "

Nothing against models... but...

In my country there are *thousand* of people interested in science & technology. And we are a very cheerful people, of course, but all Brazilians like to work hard. We used to call ourselves as a "lazy" people, but if you look at the people in the streets you will see that everyone here has an ambition and dreams that they wich *could* come true.
Like Pontes´s dream to be an astronaut -- not just a passenger, but a specialist.

As you can see, our first astronaut is a fully trained pilot who will do useful experiments aboard ISS... and he has been part of the shuttle program for years.

Tap_Sa

from Brazilian Space Agency AEB
(altavista translation, sorry if it semms likt Yoda´s speech!)

"The Launch vehicle of Satelites (VLS-1) will have to gain a new configuration that will increase the load capacity from the inclusion of an engine the liquid fuel. This is objective of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), entailed autarchy to the Ministry of the CIencia and Tecnologia (MCT), according to a letter of intentions signed in this tuesday (18/10) in Moscow for the president of the AEB, Sergio Gaudenzi, and for the president of the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos), Anatoli Perminov.

Currently, the VLS-1 counts on divided engines the solid fuel in four periods of training. Set in motion one after the burning of the other, offers, in the different phases of the trajectory of the thrower, the necessary impulse to the rank of the satellite in the space. What it is intended, with the cooperation Russian technique, is to modernize the Vehicle with the exchange of the two last engines (third and room periods of training) for one of liquid propulsion.

"the use of liquid propulsion will allow to greater precision in the insertion of the satellite in orbit", designates the director of Space Transport and Licensing of the AEB, Azevedo Joao. It still lists another advantage: the increase of the capacity of the thrower, who will be able to lead about 700kg of useful load in orbit low against 250kg of the VLS-1.

Azevedo still adds that the reduction of the amount of periods of training will simplify the vehicle, thus diminishing the on possibilities of imperfection to the diverse events that occur during the launching. Beyond the partnership for the VLS, Russia also it goes to assist the development of the launching tower that is being reconstructed in the Center of Launching of Alcantara (CLA).

The negotiations on the project of the new engine, necessary equipment its maintenance and accomplish

Yes, the VLS is a Brazilian design and Tsiklon is the Ukrainian booster. Two different vehicles.

Ah I see now. I thought that parts of the Tryklon were bought and renamed as VLS 1. But it all makes sense now.

How far is the development of the launchpad for the Tsyklon coming along. Because agreement has been signed quite some time ago.

I think that some safe distance will be repected, since VLS and Cyclone will have their assembly and launch sites on the same general area.
We are now involved in some political investigations about Government fund deviation and a referendum for decide if the commerce of fireguns and ammunition will be allowed to the common citizen, so other issues are receiving little attention by the media. As soon as the news come, I will post´ em.
