I have the opportunity to buy a Celestron 114 GT from someone that received it as a gift and has taken it out of the box only twice.

Asking price is $200.

Other than the price...would anyone consider this to be a decent "beginner" scope? Most reviews have been positive...but I would rather listen to what you on here have to say.

Does anyone have any experience with this scope? What might I see?

I am new to the hobby...and live in Toronto - unfortunately very bright.

I welcome any other suggestions...thank you!

I'd offer $150 for starters. I suspect you could see Jupiter quite well, maybe even the moons of jupiter. This is not a bad beginners scope. If the views don't turn you on, not having $150 is not the end of the world. If however you like what you see, don't skimp next time, and drop $5000 into the mix for a nice scope.
