Reaching the mockup stage makes it more advanced than a paper space plane.

Looks good as a full-scale mock-up.
I'm not sure it's too soon to ask this as the specs might not have been finalized yet but is there any word as to what "class" of computers will be installed into the CEV?
Will they be similar to the Intel/AMD/Sun CPU's currently available - hardened versions of course - or more likely a newly designed CEV-only computer similar to the IBM- designed computers used in the Shuttle Orbiter?
The core computers will without question be a RAD hardend system. I bet there is already an off-the-shelf system out there that would do the job.

On a related matter, You know building a full size mockup of an apollo capsule seems like a nice project for a true space-nut.

"Reaching the mockup stage makes it more advanced than a paper space plane."

Do you have a feeling what role this mock-up serves in the development process for this vehicle? A mock-up can be an advanced fit test, a preliminary prototype for examining the man machine operation, a tool for training, or something for publicity, or all or none of the above.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

At this stage of design it'll mainly be for basic layout. CAD is a great tool, but a mockup allows you to spot problems that just don't show up on a sim. Once the basic layout is set I expect NASA to assign some astronauts with flight experience to start working with the engineers on things like control layout and habitability.

There is truly no substitute for life-size stuff to make "it" work! Although the following is a bit simplistic, I believe it illustrates the idea:

When I was working airborne structural design on Titan 34-D, we needed to make a simple Z-bracket between two longerons in the interstage of a launch vehicle already built. After pulling the drawings (drawings on mylar were still being used on the Titans). I could NOT tell which way the tolerances on the dimensions show for the two longerons had gone, if at all.

I took a piece of corregated cardboard and then took it down to the factory floor where I bent it to fit the longerons. I then measured the dimensions and put them on the drawing. I was later told that it fit like a glove!

When all else fails...build a mockup!

Ad Luna! Ad Aries! Ad Astra!

COOL!! Rapid prototyping in action. Let's see if we can get this thing flying by 2011, or 2009 if Shuttle is retired even earlier.

One Percent of Federal Funding For Space: America CAN Afford it!! LEO is a Prison -- It's time for a JAILBREAK!!

I have seen reports that NASA is aiming for a first maned flight in June, 2011.

"[the CEV] Reaching the mockup stage makes it more advanced than a paper space plane."

Yurkin was obviously making a reference to the mockups of the Russian Kliper spacecraft which have been around for some time now.

Every time I see that piece of crap, it makes me disgusted with NASA. I hope that the Russians manage to get Kliper flying, so that we have something more to look forward to than this 1960's relic.

Relic? Take a drive in an original 1960s mini, then take a drive in a new 2000s mini. Even better crash them both. Notice any difference?

If it works it's not silly.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Every time I see a space planer pitching a childish temper tantrum it makes it harder for me to ever take space planes serious again.

I know what your feeling man. It seems we haven't moved forward, more like backwards or stagnant. But hey, manned space exploration is quite stagnated at the moment because NASA has lost its guts, and needs to change its direction. It’s unfortunate that the STS program has shown some faults in the craft design; normally engineers would take this experience and create a new improved model from what they learnt. Not scrape those plans, and dust off the ideas that first got man into space.

I may be missing something here; I'm not a rocket scientist, just a humble technician.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver
