http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=19373

Everyone here probably reads spaceref daily but I thought I'd post it here anyway.

Hmm, is this to do with the .5m diameter reduction? I have a fuzzy memory of reading of the 5m diameter addendum a long time ago so maybe that's already in both teams' designs. The two allowed phase I extensions could push phase II contractor selection to the eve of '07... let's hope NASA can decide by August.

I guess this means that we won't have any new CEV design details until late next month at the earliest.

I think that's an old image released in sept '05, before the size reduction.

funny how the word "delayed" gets translated into "extended" in press releases

I mentioned that. The report says there are options for extensions to that date, but an August selection time frame is reported as 'likely.'

Is there an echo?

Phase 1 was extended and the award date is still August 06./i>

I have been on many government contracts with multiple phases where one phase is designed with options to bridge funding to the next phase. For example, one SBIR contract had a phase I with $75K and an option of $25K, but you only received the $25K option if you were awarded the second phase. I think the idea is to keep the team together during the delays associated with getting a second phase contract in place (we once had ~6 month delay from announcement that we won a phase II and the time the contract was actually executed).
