http://www.nasawatch.com/archives/000446.html#more

It seems the requirement of a seperate LSAM precludes the possibility of t/space's architecture of (1) the CSX and (2) a CEV which flies to and lands on the moon.

Am I reading this right? Does t/space basically now have to change their whole plan??

I've been wondering about that, too. Let's wait for the release of the RFP document in january.

Golly! You don't suppose the NASA bureaucracy is up to its old tricks and picking the winners and losers ahead of time, do you? . . . Are they rigging things so that only the established mega corporations can win, again?

Nah, not with the champion of spaceflight in the White House . . . we've solved all those problems with VSE, right?

So what's the purpose of the SOW then? If the SOW makes architecture requirements can an RFP make architecture requirements that overrule the previous ones?

I'm not trying to be ironic or passive aggressive towards NASA. I'm genuinely confused.

"If the SOW makes architecture requirements can an RFP make architecture requirements that overrule the previous ones?"

I hope so.

I'm confused

Normally it goes something like this

1 Statement of need -- /> 2 Specify Requirements --> 3 Design Architecture --> 4 Write Fundtional specification --> 5 Plan work

So to end up designing a car you would go

Want to get from A to B -- /> In one hour on a road --> Car with a petrol engine and wheels --> Has 200 bhp, manual clutch etc etc --> work out how to build it

So where does this SOW fit in? It looks a lot like step 4 when so far only step 1 has been done, and work on steps 2 & 3 is ongoing.

The SOW looks like someone just decided they wanted to recreate Apollo! (and anyone with other fancy ideas can take a hike)

I'm confused too, because doesn't a Statement Of Work normally occur only when a contract is actually given? Now, you can have a SOW and still not have the contractor picked out; this is how it's done if you're trying to get multiple teams to compete with the product, not just the proposal. I know of a couple of projects like that where I work. There's a SOW for each of the main teams, bringing them up to the point where the competition will occur, at which point only one team will get a SOW for the remainder of the work.

But I didn't think CEV was going to be done that way. Does somebody know differently?

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Ok I read this now. Yes it does remind me of Von Brauns concepts.

Okay what about Project Horizon and the DC-X Design as the Lander for the Lunar Missions?

Any takers on that line???????

Can anyone see launching both the 4-man CM and a CSM all for under 50k lb to LEO or GTO with the Delta H or Atlas H on one shot? Or will it require 2 launches and a modified launcher here or there?

Ok now maybe the Shuttle SRB derived launcher can be used for Unmanned Cargo or something.....

HAHAHA...
