This is the sort of sensationalistic reporting that does nothing to help the cause of the Space program.
Nowhere in the body of the report does it mention anything about astronauts being upset about the budget.
This kind of thing really steams me.
Maybe the writer doesn't know the difference between an astronaut and an astronomer ?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to discourage them too much. It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."

Thomas Jefferson

BTW, just to cut CNN some slack...at least IMO they are one of the better networks for reporting on space related issues. Obviously, they should have passed this one by Miles O'Brien before publication.

edit: Just checked...they've changed the headline and taken it off the home page.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. I saw it - at best just a typo or worse, they don't know the difference. I don't think it was edited out. I think someone just doesn't know astronomer from astronaut.

> ...poor reporting, or perhaps the editor cut that part out!/i>

Back in the early-mid 1990s I was quoted in a couple of articles, and they got it (or at least framed) it so completely wrong that I avoid talking to reporters now.

As a similar example, the New York Times had an article the other day about NASA's cut back on science funding, and they had a quote by Rep. Boehlert which really seemed to put NASA's efforts in a bad light.

However, I actually watched the streaming video where Boehlert made these comments, and he spent much more time with his nauseating gushing of how great Griffin is and talking about how great NASA is doing given the complex situation Congress has given them (lots of tasks, but not a lot of money). Congress really seems to like NASA right now.

They just changed it to "Scientists".

Do we have a CNN mole on SDC?
I saw the dumb article headline too, it got passed around the space communitty quite fast. Ironically the article does cite an astronaut (defending the cut, not vice versa), but I doubt the Reuters author knew that in the first place.

-Ben

Yeah, Miles seems to make an honest attempt to remain neutral when it comes to space. I also feel sorry when he is interviewing people, and he has to ask the dumb questions for the yokels watching.
