Doesnt an ISS crew member get switched every shuttle mission? Just works out that this time its only a matter of weeks between launches
No. We are in a new paradigm. One person (a Shuttle Rotating Crew or 'shrek') is to be rotated via the shuttle. The plan is to have them rotate every 4-6 months. However, ESA wanted an ESA guy for Columbus comissioning, JAXA wanted a JAXA guy for... you get the drift. Just luck of the draw.

Are the ESA and JAXA astronauts expected to be more familiar with the modules from their agencies than the NASA and Russian astronauts would be?

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

It probably has less to do with technical knowledge and more to do with politics.

So, again we are defeated. This victory belongs to the farmers, not us.

-Kambei Shimada from the movie Seven Samurai

I would hope that there are ESA astronauts that know more about the Columbus module than American astronauts. The module cost about 880 million Euro to build and it was built in Europe and will be controlled from Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. So, it's only logical to fly European astronauts to the ISS to activate and utilize its capabilities.

After Dan Tani is replaced by Léopold Eyharts in December, Léopold will be replaced by Garrett E. Reisman in February, 2008.

Regards

"Are the ESA and JAXA astronauts expected to be more familiar with the modules from their agencies than the NASA and Russian astronauts would be"

Expected? No, but in reality they will. SInce they spend more time in their home country they can get more training. Right now we are trying to evaluate how best to conduct training int he regime of 6 crew members. Clearly each person can't be an expert in all areas but need some familiarity. Fortunately, the USOS (US Lab, Nodes, Columbus, JEM) is all pretty similar in operation.
