S3 isn't based at orbiter.
It has its own orbital physics mechanism, and everything else is made by Micke too.

In reply to:

I think comparing Space Shuttle to cars or planes is an invalid comparison.

Not an entirely invalid comparison, Leo. We are taking two relatively mature transportation systems (aircraft, cars) and lining them up against a very immature one (space vehicles). If you take the cars and aircraft in their developmental infancy, they were likely every bit as dangerous and every bit as expensive, relatively speaking.

You might even make a case (admitedly weakish) the other way. Namely, that given the relative maturation of the aircraft and car industries, accidents causing death should have been entirely eliminated by now. But, so long as humans are anywhere in the design/manufacturing/testing/operating process, this will be an entirely unrealistic goal.

While no death is desirable, I would contend that the Shuttle has done 'well' to only have had fourteen flight deaths during its operational lifetime. spaceiscool has two critical flaws in his logic. Namely that he thinks the next generation space vehicle will be inexpensive to build and operate, and that it won't kill Astronauts. Neither statement is likely to be true.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

A guy posted this on our site and have to say it blows the socks off the previous simulator posted on here.

f you're talking about Orbiter as the other simulator, you're wrong, orbiter is much broader in scope and all in all a different type of product.
plus it has a large library of fan-built add-ons.

http://asteroid-invasion.blogspot.com

http://www.solvengineer.com/asteroid-invasion.html

True
Comparing Orbiter to S3 is like comparing apples to oranges.
Orbiter tries to simulate physics for a lot of spacecrafts, while S3 tries to simulate the STS (and it's physics of course) as precise as possible. If you want to fly the shuttle, like real astronauts, go S3.
If you rather fly to pluto, go Orbiter (or the Apollo missions, NASSP really impressed me).
So, it's your choice

I would hurry if I was you, shuttles won't be here for long anymore... A few more years, and they will be replace by new LV's!
