The recent announcement by the National Ignition Facility is about inertial confinement fusion where a group of lasers hit a small pellet from all sides. The primary purpose of the facility is the study of high pressure physics such that they can maintain our nuclear stockpile. This system can fire about once per day and it would need to fire ten times per second to be a utility scale provider. The excessive time between firings is due to the need to cool the optics back down so they regain their shape.
Magnetic confinement fusion at ITER projects breakeven demonstration by 2035.
