GRAND CANYON STAR PARTY 2007

For someone looking for a great summer astronomy getaway. June 9th to the 16th at the canyon is the largest public star party around. We have astronomers from around the country (and the world) show up with their scopes to show the visitors at the canyon the night sky.

There is usually 50 to 75 scopes set up on the South Rim (about 20 on the North Rim) we have had counts of 300 people a night looking through the scopes.

THIS IS NOT LIKE OTHER STAR PARTIES!! We are there for the public, you get headlights from the busses till they stop running at 11pm. Then the night becomes ours, the NPS lets us stay set up on the rim all night long for some of the best dark sky observing in the country.

It's always planned for sometime in June so if you don't make this one there is always next year. You don't need to bring a scope, just make travel and lodging plans for you and your family, you can wander the canyon with them during the day then stay up all night with us.

PS I've been going since 2001, Brad (NEVERS) since 2003, SKyJim has been going to either the North or South Rim since the mid 90s. We always have a great time.

www.siriuslookers.org

...so if you don't make this one there is always next year...

Well, kind of a bummer, but we won't be making it this year!
I was hoping it would be a bit later in June, (like last year's was, I believe..?), since we have to wait for the kids to get out of school, (their last day is 14 June!), and then we could've attended. As it is, we plan to be out at the Grand Canyon during the last week of June. I know there are a lot of things to do there, but I really wanted to attend the star party....(whaa!) Oh well, as you've so eloquently put it, there's always next year! Here's hoping!
I guess I'll resort to living vicariously, so don't forget to post those experiences! (Please?)

June 2008 looks bad for Moon phase. I'm glad I don't have to make the final choice on when it's going to be. (I'm only asked for input) I'm guessing June 7th to 14th (early Moon) or June 21st to 28th (late Moon) Full Moon on the 19th. Oh well the public likes the Moon, besides it will look good in my Tak. NPS will not let us hold the event over the 4th of July.

June 2009 looks great, June 20th to 27th. Right over NEW MOON

Always remember this is a public star party, we are there to share the night sky with the people.

Got a call from SkyJim the other day. He didn't have time to talk because he was at Griffith Obs getting ready to open the dome, but he got out voted on the North Rim by his wife and daughter. He's coming to the South Rim this year. (he likes the North Rim)
www.siriuslookers.org
