Is it possible to get a telescope for less than $400 that would provide extra-solar system views of objects showing them as more than points of light? What do you recommend?

With that kind of money you could buy an 8" Dobsonian telescope from Orion which will show you a great deal of deep-sky objects.

I agree. This would be an excellent scope to keep you busy for a few years.

Clear Skies
Bill

It does look like the biggest bang for the buck, for under $400 from a highly regarded maker.

By the way, you can't resolve stars to anything more than a point of light.

Hey, maybe in a couple a years you can use your $400 to buy a trip to the 100m Overwhelmingly Large Telescope in Chile

What is your opinion as to the capability of the Meade DS-2114S? What is the next logical step from there?
