Griffin on Mars Society steering committee

Picked this tidbit up from NASA Watch, Michael Griffin is on the steering committe of the Mars Society.<br /><br />I am not sure what this means. Can the Mars Society elect someone to their steering committee without that person agreeing to it (i.e., just to have an important name on their web site)? Griffin became a member of the MS steering committee long before he got the job as NASA administrator. I doubt he's still active for the Mars Society...
