Actually, not centuries. Pluto was only dsicovered in 1930, 76 years ago (1 Halley's Comet orbit)

But the Krell forgot one thing John. In our opinion (as you can see in the discussion on www.save-pluto.de) this is also a cultural problem. A thing that kids in school learned for over 70 years as a fact now seems to be wrong. On the one hand it´s okay if it´s now corrected. But on the other hand a lot of experts don´t seem to agree with the decision also. So how should a normal kid in school or the normal man or woman on the street now know what to think? They should learn now that it was wrong what they learned for years before 24/8 but the experts are not sure fro themselve. Thats is quite unprofessional.

Another problem is that this decision was made on the last day of the conference when most of the experts had already left. Why did´n´t they decide on the first day?

The third point to become emotional about this theme is: there were no big breaking news about astronomy in the last weeks and month so it seems that they needed a new hype for space in general...

See the whole discussion on www.save-pluto.de and tell us your opinion!

Sorry,

we are just two guys with an exhausting job at a big german newspaper and work on this private project www.save-pluto.de after work from 7 to 12 pm every night (no private life any more but who cares). We will surely launch an English version shortly but unfortunately we can now present you just a german site. But we already had some English visitors so just leave an English comment and vote.

By the way: the petition under the bullet point "Die Aktion" (means: the event) for the IAU is on English!!!

As a small translation of www.save-pluto.de : "Eure Story" is a forum where you can tell about your most impressive storys related to Pluto but there are also scientifical discussions. I will start an English discussion there now - just for you!

"Euer Statement" is a guestbook where u can leave a comment.

And on the homepage you can find a voting where you can explain why you voted for the point you voted for :)

See you on www.save-pluto.de

Yeah, I know you don't want my vote, but what the heck
I just had a call from one of my friends at the local observatory. We have debated the Pluto issue for at least 5 years, he on the planet side, me on the not a planet side. We have always done it with entertainment and education in mind. Whether Pluto is called a planet or not, there's a tremendous opportunity to enlighten the public on this issue, discussing what the other denizens of the outer solar system are.
We're planning to add a live debate on the issue to one of our public nights at the observatory.
No matter how you feel, it is a great time to explore our neighborhood.
If I might be permitted a slight plug
New Jersey Astronomical Association link

Meteor Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
