"Hearing" meteors

Would like to start a discussion on the phenomena that I myself have experienced, "hearing" a meteor at the same time as seeing it. I've heard several explanations including the most dismissed one of "you imagined it", which I dismiss because during one instance several other witnesses were present. The most common denominator of these occurances was that at the time I had long curly hair, an "afro" if you wish, and the meteors were quite brilliant. The noise was a crackling radio noise, or a noise like food frying in a pan.
