"it wasn't that long ago when the thought of casting a black man in the lead role of a blockbuster like this wouldn't even have occurred to anybody. They made the same mistake with Blade Runner, which takes place in 2019! It doesn't really detract from the movie, but I just wish producers would be a little more pragmatic in choosing the time.

2001: A Space Odyssey was about as good as anyone's guess back in 1967 since no one could foresee the stagnation of NASA.

Its really annoys mean when people play the race card. As if every movie has to have a racial quota to be political correct.

I agree with that 100%!!! Even the cartoons now have one white, one black, one Asian, one Indian, and two or three “mixed”. It’s like some kind of quota. Good grief!! What ever happened to ordinary, natural, “odds are” mis-match? The pretentious attempt “not to offend anybody” has resulted in a de facto offense to everyone of conscience.

It’s time for movies to portray reality, rather than projected utopia (which, of course, never works.)

Our Solar System must be passing through a Non Sequitur area of space.

The funny thing is, it wasn't that long ago when the thought of casting a black man in the lead role of a blockbuster like this wouldn't even have occurred to anybody. And his leading lady is white woman. I think we've come a long way as a society

I disagree. We have not only NOT come a long way, we have actually regressed significantly. Artificially replacing a very white player, with a black player, is an obvious and pre-calculated racial statement. That is especially evident in the disparity between the original Elijah Bailey character, and the “superior” black replacement.

The one thing the is clear here is the premeditated and deliberate decision to create and perpetuate a racial statement in this movie, at the expense of the original intent. The fact that I consider Will Smith to be a mediocre actor, relying heavily on special effects and animatronics to compensate for his below-standard acting abilities, is not the issue. The point is, the producers have chosen this venue to make decidedly racial statements that have nothing to do with Isaac Asimov’s genius, or acting ability.

I urge everyone to boycott this movie in the theaters.

Our Solar System must be passing through a Non Sequitur area of space.

I still disagree. They didn't cast Will Smith because he is black. They cast him because he's a box office draw. Money is the bottom line here.

Well you saw my first reaction to it in this thread. I loved it too.

Saw it, was prepared to dislike it, or shake my head, and was suprised (which is starting to become pretty common lately).

They were pretty faithful to asimovs vision. Most of it was a few people trying to figure out how the robots could violate those 3 laws of robotics.

Sure they mixed it up a bit, switched the characters around a bit, and mixed in more action than any asimov book I'd seen. They didn't play around with the 3 laws as much as the books.

But the sacrifices they made were what makes it into a movie, not a book. They got you (and a wide range of others) into the story quickly. And they didn't beat me over the head with things very much.

Spoiler alert:

okay, that should give you good warning. Example of not beating me over the head: Will's cybernetic arm. I wondered what the odd scars were in the beginning, but as he lifted weights, I figured it was just from a surgery from the accident (and I even noticed he lifted with only the one arm).

That was it, it didn't come up again until later, when they explained (in a not so heavy handed way) his suspicion of robots.

I was suprised at how confident people were in the robots. Will (I for some reason cannot remember the name!!) did seem to be the only sane and rational person. He was the only person that said: Sure, it hasn't broke, but that doesn't mean it won't. Surely they still had computer crashes and glitches, a simpler technology that'd been around much longer.

I like the ghost in the machine logic train (seems Asimovish).

Oh, and I think the end of the movie implies why the zeroth law was formed.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

So much for good intentions. My girlfriend insisted I took her to see I,robot last night, and i have to admit, it is a very good adaption. I really enjoyed it, well, except the part where i had to pony up with 28 #!%*@* Dollars for two people, and that was WITH her student discount. [@]

Will Smith remains my favourite human actor, his every nuance, his very spirit, exudes a feeling of kindness and inclusiveness for all mankind IMHO. He is everyman, but cool like we ain't, and built like we would just wish we were.. I want his babies, lol. Bwahahaha. So does my Girlfriend, of course. Especially after seeing the full frontal shots, lol, I said " Nah, half the movies are seamless cgi these days, babe " but I don't think she brought it.

No, I though it was a great script, really cracked along, but didn't leave the important parts out, virtually zero exposition, what there was was just the normal explaining of positions people hold, like we normally do.

And for we British fans, of a certain age, even an sneaky appearance (American theft ala the Cybermen turning up as Borg, I think )of an old favourite; " I like BIG jobs " Mekquake.

Since Spooner has a robotic arm, that makes him a cyborg, not a robot.

here's a fun philosophical question:

How much "human" do you need to still be a human? I.e. how much of your body can be replaced before you're something else, like a cyborg (as a distict seperation) or a robot?

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

It all depends on your origins. If you're born out of organic flesh, you will always be human no matter what cybernetic enhancements you attain. If you're developed from steel and circuits, you're a robot (or android for ones with human attributes).

He came out to visit for the first time since his operation. He was limping badly and had to use a cane. I asked him if the new knew was giving him trouble. He replied that it was the old knew that was giving him the limp.

What about brain augmentation, I'd love to have a neural-google interface inside my head. Would make exams so much easier...

Good film but I thought it suffered a little too much from product placement.

Insidently, I had a feeling that Spooner might be at least "part" robot, but perhaps more than just an arm.

Alan Tudyk deserves a lot of credit for "doing a Gollum" excellently, really brought Sonny to "life" or as close to life as he was meant to.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. *Finally* saw the movie last night. It was really good, I liked the theme of human freedom means being allowed to make stupid mistakes. The only thing that bothered me, and this is a really WEIRD thing to be bothered by, is they never really explain just what happened to all the water in Lake Michigan
