I might be wrong but doesn’t those pictures seem whack?
Why would you build a huge complex? Wouldn’t it be logical to build down instead of up? That way it's easier to solve some of the problems that face "Staying on other planets?" They still are a challenge but not as difficult as if you're Space Station sized complex was sitting above ground. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry If anyone has answered or responded to this before, and if it's in the wrong section.

Are you refering to problems such as solar and cosmic radiation that may threaten manned missions on the Moon and Mars? Eventually, we'll have to locate underground or at least develop good shielding materials to blanket our habitats. Do you mind expanding on your question a little?

For many places in our solar system building down makes much more sense than up. But it makes for poor visuals, so artists representations tend to show dome, towers, etc.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke
