In order to control the flight of a rocket it is necessary to be able to control/ or overdrive if required the power out of the nozzle of the rocket. India did not have that engine of its own so it was dependent on Russia for these engines. Even that import was banned by the MTCR.

So India desperately needed such an engine and finally it could succeed in developing it and it was tested for its 'full time burn' of 720 seconds on 15th at Mahendragiri test range.

Its immediate use will be in the GSLV launch scheduled shortly.

http://www.isro.org/pressrelease/Nov15_2007.htm
===========

S^3
