Having watched many a launch video - sometimes you hear the call for Auto Sequence Start on the audio at about T-31.

For some reason, the voice appears to be the same each time - a female voice, doesn't seem to be of the same tone as the other calls you can hear. Is this a computer giving the call? Someone in the firing room? Or even the Shuttle's Computer(s) - as they take control of her critical functions?

I ask as I did have a chat with someone today who claims to be a big follower of the Shuttle Program - and he said it's the Shuttle giving the call herself. As fun as that sounds, I thought I'd ask the far more knowledgable people on here.

I've also heard a few versions of the call.

I can't for the life of me make it out sometimes, but I've heard (again, apologies for the spelling, I'm doing this prophetically)

Examples:

Columbia, STS-93 on a failed launch (cut off at T-8 ish): Call: "CLS (?) is go for auto sequence"
Endeavour STS-111 successful launch: Call: "CLS (?) is go burr (can't make it out"

Interestingly, STS-93's video of the failed attempt (Hydrogen high in the aft engine compartment) had more calls from what appeared to be the same voice as Auto Sequence Start on the "Cut off is given" and then some of the calls noting "no fire detectors tripped" as well as other status calls.

It's bugging me now, so hence the question
That is the very human voice of the console engineer who is responsible for the ground launch sequencer. I don't know her name, but her comm call sign is CGLS.

-Pad Rat-
