She was a US air force test pilot before being selected to become an astronaut in 1990. In 1995, she became the first woman to pilot a shuttle, a mission aboard Discovery to rendezvous with the Russian space station Mir. She was also the first woman to command a shuttle flight, a Columbia mission to deploy the Chandra X-Ray Observatory in 1999.</ul>More at the link.
