"Iran has successfully fired its first rocket into space, Iranian state television has announced." BBC report.

The Beeb seem to be confusing 'into space' (i.e. 100 km up), with 'into orbit'.

"The Beeb seem to be confusing 'into space' (i.e. 100 km up), with 'into orbit'."

With all due respect, I don't see where there was any confusion. Nowhere did they suggest that the vehicle went into orbit.

MSNBC.com also reported on this:

Iran says it blasted rocket into space

Iran said Sunday it successfully tested a rocket that went into space, apparently part of its drive to launch five satellites into orbit by 2010./p>

Iran’s Science and Technology and Defense ministries built the craft, state-run television quoted Mohsen Bahrami, the head of Iran’s Space Research Center, as saying./p>

Bahrami provided no other details beyond saying that Iran had successfully launched what he called a space rocket or space missile./p>

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to discourage them too much. The cited articles are light on technical details of this launch, as one might expect I guess. I think I'm right in saying the Iranians have been working for some years with the Shahab 4 missile, with a view to adapting it for satellite delivery.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

I doubt that the major media outlets will be giving any juicy details.

Personally, I'm waiting for the ubiquitous Globalsecurity.org to doll out the real info. Here's a link to Globalsecurity.org's page on the Shahab-4

I'm surprised that they haven't done a report on the launch yet. Everybody must be off today.

So, again we are defeated. Yes, no doubt it will take a little time for specific mission and performance details to filter through. My search of the Shahab 4 turned up this as top qualifier, and is an interesting discussion piece also.

I would presume the initial reports of which have labelled the vehicle as a Shahab 4 are accurate. But, they do have Shahab's 5 & 6 at various stages as well.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

If I were them, I'd have aimed it at the Indian Ocean. (Heck, that's where NASA aims its External Tanks.)

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
