Mars may have dozens of lakes beneath its south pole

I note this report about Mars here. Mars colonists are going to wish they had an atmosphere above them, https://phys.org/news/2021-06-mars-colonists-atmosphere.html

My observation. Interesting report and crater image provided perhaps 5 years old in the report. "How often does this happen on Mars? A 2013 study estimated that the red planet gets womped by more than 200 small asteroids or bits of comets per year, forming craters at least 3.9 meters (12.8 feet) across. Like on Earth, even a small impact would wreak havoc on any Martian settlement. But impacts of this size on Mars happen more frequently."

It only takes one impact like this in the movie, the Martian and the base camp is gone :)

I read something about lava tubes, which if true would get them away from that and the unfiltered radiation.
