A Meteoroid Hits the Moon

June 13, 2006: There's a new crater on the Moon. It's about 14 meters wide, 3 meters deep and precisely one month, eleven days old.

NASA astronomers watched it form: "On May 2, 2006, a meteoroid hit the Moon's Sea of Clouds (Mare Nubium) with 17 billion joules of kinetic energy—that's about the same as 4 tons of TNT," says Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office in Huntsville, AL. "The impact created a bright fireball which we video-recorded using a 10-inch telescope."

Lunar impacts have been seen before--"stuff hits the Moon all the time," notes Cooke--but this is the best-ever recording of an explosion in progress:

Video

Full Story

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I had often wondered how often we see lunar impacts. Apparently quite a bit more often than I thought.

Don't let who you are keep you from becoming who you want to be!

So why does it take over a month to release such a harmless story?

More than likely, they want to be sure of all the pertinent info before releasing it to the public.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

Someone asked the question once, when was / or has any body seen a large impact explosion on the moon, the answer that came back was : That in 1150 some monks in Tibet witnessed an almighty explosion on the moon, has anybody else heard this story or confirm the story.

SPONGE

Link

There is anecdotal evidence that early chinese observers witnessed a meteorite impact and described it as "The moon grew a limb" (describing a cloud of ejecta), but I couldn't find the specifics...
