Assuming there are still three shuttles left after retirement, where should they be displayed? Perhaps Houston, Huntsville and the Cape like the three Saturn V's?
They should let people go inside one of them, like with the "Explorer" mockup currently at the KSC visitor's center! <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /><br /><br />
I hope they DON'T give one to Houston. JSC's Saturn V is only now being partially restored after decades of neglect and sitting out in Texas heat and hurricanes. It was very sad watching it rot away year after year. The Shuttles (only after they have finished their yet to be completed lifetimes) should only go to institutions that have the resources and ability to properly care for them.
National Air & Space needs one--maybe swap out Enterprise to someone else.<br /><br />However, if you read my post 'Shuttle Until Failure' You'll hear my idea for the right end to the shuttle program.
Number one priorety would that they would be indoors in a controlled environment, shouldn't be too hard they are no where near the size of a Saturn V. The Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport already has Enterprise http://www.nasm.si.edu/imagedetail.cfm?imageID=386, maybe they would swap it out for a 'real' one?<br /><br />I reckon they would choose DC, KSC and Houston.
In the post 911 world I suspect that they are not that keen to encourage Edwards as a tourist site. I recall they closed any tours out there completely and then made it 'appointment only', months in advance. What is the situation now?
I would like to see one of the shuttles displayed in a vertical 'full stack' configuration. Maybe with some parts from the pad. Would require a huge building, but I would love to see it as it would appear on the pad.
"I probably need a lot more experience driving before i hit the interstate"<br /><br />Thats the only thing keeping me from going over there more. Im in lake mary just min's.
Yeah, i'd definitely go over on my own if it were that close. Like every day. <img src="/images/icons/tongue.gif" /> <br />EDIT: this is my uber valuable 1024th post!
Now, 2048 seems so far away doesn't it? Sure did for me!<br /><br />Congrats!<br /><br />Wayne <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p>"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher</p> </div>
Doubling your post count for each promotion gets hard, huh? <img src="/images/icons/tongue.gif" /><br />But it's nice in the beginning. And it's easy to remember how many more posts i need.<br />thanks!
