Is Nasa allowed to accept donations? Or is there a block on them getting outside funding since the government pays their bills?

I asked the same question on the pluk SDC.

No, I really don't think they are able to take donations for the space program. I think they have trust funds set up to accept donations for victims and their families, or something like that. That is all.

I still would like to know how and what needs to be done to have NASA get more than twice the funding every year.
NASA only gets a very very small percent of the yearly federal budget.

I'm thinking that maybe the best thing to do is write your representative lawmakers. You can find all who serve you
at Senate.gov and House.gov Once there, somewhere on the top half of the screen click on
'find your representative by zip code' or something like that. The list then comes up and each representative should have
either a link to their website or a 'contact me' link. Either way you can then email them. Keep it simple and clear.
If yours does not do what you ask of them, be sure to vote them out of office; tell your friends and family too.
Midterm elections are coming up soon.

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking about possibly getting people together to get some kind of bill passed, that would allow NASA to be able to accept donations from the public. I have always been a bit peaved that NASA seems to get the short end of the stick when it came to money.

I figure if I have money laying around that I would like to see go to the space program, why not be able to give it to them? Since we have no real say in where our tax dollars go, I cannot express that I want my majority to go to NASA.

I would definately put in the bill that any donations received can not affect the amount of money given to NASA via the federal budget.

So they cannot say Well you guys got 10 million in donations, so your budget will be 10 million less.

A bill would take years. but I really, really like the idea. How about something on the idea of say....a limited partnership(like those folks who share lottery tickets or invest in stocks together)...or a charity....people in space.org or some such. Like buying tickets for the lottery....put your money in, it goes into a escrow account til there is enough to do something with?...

You could probably hit all the major conventions and get donations.

When we hit the magic amout...have a lottery and see who goes! it would take years but what the heck...were not going anywhere anytime soon anyway!....rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

We could use it as a punishment on this forum..If your rude or say a naughty word...slap ya with $5 in the space jar!....lol ;)

We could go on oprah have her praise our effort and it would explode we would all be heading to mars. ...DAMN that would be sweet....opps heres my $5...lol

Anyway, I agree that Nasa ought to be able to take donations because if you can donate to the presidential election fund on your taxes, then why HELL not be able to donate to Nasa....

OPPS..heres my $5 to start off.

I am soooooo ready to do what I can do to get stuff rolling........Doesnt seem we can wait on the governments to get it done!.....rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I know.
But be sure and send your lawmakers a simple email, and tell your friends and family too.
Unfortunately that is the way the government works, and be sure to vote the ones that do not agree with you out of
office next year.

I wish it only took my vote to get people out of office. That would be awesome.

I think that getting a bill together is one of the better ways to do it. It may take a while, but it would be effective. From not only publisizing the fact that NASA is not getting the money they need, but also from the fact that you are doing it... striking out and trying to change things ourselves which is rare.

It may not work, but it may help change some of the opinions in Washington, if we can get enough of us together to back something like this.

I am all up for a partnership. Anyone whom is willing to hop on the band wagon. Now is the time to express your interest.
