The article has at least 6 references to *life*. The goal I think is clear. Abiogenesis at work on Mars (in the past or present) created life on Mars too just like abiogenesis created life on Earth. Abiogenesis needs confirmation from other planets it seems.

Hooray for the technology to retrieve a soil sample from Mars. However, Mars with lesser than Earth gravity, thinner atmosphere, longer solar year and a desiccated, desolate, dolorous surface seems to me to be an impossible place for any long term human/plant/animal habitation. Such begs the question: WHY plan to send humans to Mars? Perhaps someone could post the cost justification(s) of attempting the colonization of Mars in terms of human benefit. For me it seems "good money is being thrown after bad".
