NASA posted their "Flagship Technology Demonstration Request for Information" on Monday the 17th which gives a pretty clear indication of where NASA is headed with target dates and graphic picturing of coming technologies.

It's a real GEM!!

Here's the link to the Documents list page:
http://nspires.nasaprs.com/external/sol ... nit&solId={980D21C5-AF8F-7252-C1BA-507EA54906BB}&path=open

and here's what you'll find links for there:
Announcement Documents
Section 1: Flagship Technology Demonstration Request for Information (RFI) Overview (pdf)
Section 2: Response Instructions and Workshop Details (pdf)
Section 3: FTD 1 - Advanced In-Space Propulsion Demonstration Response Details (pdf)
Section 4: FTD 2 - In-Space Propellant Transfer and Storage Demonstration (pdf)
Section 5: FTD 3 - Inflatable ISS Mission Module Demonstration (pdf)
Section 6: FTD 4 - Aero-Assist Demonstration (pdf)
Section 7: AR&D Demonstration Vehicle (pdf)
Section 8: Closed Loop Environmental Control System (pdf)
Section 9: Innovative Architectures (pdf)
Section 10: Public Outreach and Participatory Exploration (pdf)
Section 11: FTD Program NGOs (pdf)
Section 12: FTD Technology NGOs (pdf)

There may be too much for one TOPIC, but I invite general discussion in these, NASA's real plans...

Link seams to have a couple of characters which conflict with post processing, so you have to copy text of that link to your browser. Perhaps someone else has more specific ideas.

To get around it, i used probably the first thing that came up, after searching for 'short URL' - let's see how it works :

Flagship Technology Demonstration Request for Information (RFI)

( link preview )

It even has a counter (i usually don't use this) :

If you quote this post, you can see how it is done, and then cancel the post, if you wish so.

Forum thread with all sorts of stuff, including posting help (it now actually has something to do with the topic title ;) ) :

I go check those pictures now.

Forget pictures, read text, things like :

NASA anticipates development and flight demonstration of a 30 kWe Multi-Mission SEP Stage. This SEP Stage would utilize NASA’s NEXT Ion Propulsion System combined with an advanced array technology and be executed as a Flagship Technology Demonstration Mission as early as CY14. This combined technology is anticipated to deliver a significant bus performance capability with broad NASA and DoD mission applicability for a wide range of existing and potential future missions in Earth-space, Cis-Lunar Space, and Deep-Space. It is anticipated that this Stage would provide a pathway for demonstration of key technologies in support of future human spaceflight systems. NASA is seeking spacecraft bus concept(s) which provide for rapid design, development, integration, and test, and which accommodate the requirements of the advanced NEXT propulsion and FAST array technologies. A concept which readily accommodates future advancements/improvements in the propulsion element (e.g., higher power electric propulsion thrusters) and power system (e.g., increases in array power up to 90-200 kWe) is essential.

Aero-Assist flight experiment is old and was started on 20 years ago, worked for a while as a shuttle payload, then it just went away. It doesn't need a technology program or a study, just built it if you want it. Resurrecting it in this RFI just indicates they are reaching back into the old cancelled program files to come up with something to absorb budget and make it look like something breathtakingly advanced. Same goes for closed-cycle ECLSS, these have been science fair projects for 30 years. If you want one, just go ahead and build it. I'm very underwhelmed by this.
