New Russian space chief clarifies comments about ISS departure

Glad to read that. Borisov sounds like a reasonable, respectable partner in space.

He may well be right about failure rates and the potential for cascading failures, but only time will tell how things reach the end-of-life on the ISS. That in itself may be valuable information to use in designing its successors.

When it comes to de-orbiting, I would think that could be accomplished with some purpose built rocket stages, if necessary. But, that would take some advanced planning in case there is some sort of cascading failure that makes evacuation necessary earlier than desired/planned. Hopefully, somebody is already starting to think about how to guarantee a proper de-orbit process. We really don't want this thing coming down where there are people.
