I just watched a video on the next space station (the possibilities)!

It needs to be big, have artificial gravity, cost a trillion dollars altogether and make five trillion dollars and more over time! It needs to be the first of far too many to count, growing in a growing energy of them, in the solar system!

In my uninformed opinion a space structure can not be built that can take human occupation for more than 10 yrs. or so. No matter how sophisticated the environmental system. We shed and excrete. Human grime. Much more than just dead skin cells. Each one of us sheds an environment.

Therefore I think our next space station should be fabric. With change outs planned in future years. Sequential replacement of the station itself. So the next station can be permanent. And modifiable for the future. Or perhaps a station with generational concentric rings. Disposing the inner ones.

Space bubble tube fabric technology. Compact, light, expandable…. And disposable.

Just a thought.

A rock, a club, a sharpened stick, fire, cracked rocks, and a fabric bag to carry fire cracked rocks in.

Fabric was the first true invention. The first manufactured tool. A container.

The next space station will likely be Gateway. Unless it gets cancelled, which is possible.

The next terrestrial station will likely be part of the Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program. IIRC, Orbital Reef is the largest proposal.

I doubt we'll get anything bigger than those for a while because you don't gain much from making a larger station, unless it's orders of magnitude larger, and I don't think we have the political will for that.
