I can just see Pluto makeing a come back . Especially since they way they have the definatioin of what makes a planet makes every other planet with a moon not a planet.

I have an answer for everything...you may not like the answer or it may not satisfy your curiosity..but it will still be an answer.
"Imagination is more important then Knowledge" ~Albert Einstien~
Guns dont kill people. Duh -- the 4 big ones. - Leovinus

So you think that Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the only planets, not Earth?

--____________________________________________--

Don't be too hard on me...I'm only in PHY 1010 ;)

         The following goes without saying:

Right. Next to Jupiter, Earth is a pebble.

well maybe Mercury - Mars are the "Planets" while Jupiter - Neptune should just be called the Solar Rotunds.. and Pluto is just a little Planetoid. I mean heck, we've grown up thinking that we lived on a planet, it'd be kind of hard to convince us otherwise.

Hey, we grew up thinking Pluto was a planet too. All the planets we've seen around other stars have been gas giants. So if we said that a planet was something big enough to be detected from another solar system, then our system has 4.

The poll results are very interesting.
Go to the top of the thread and check out the results so far.

MW

But the Krell forgot one thing John. The poll is interesting.
But 8 is the least number in the poll, while arguments in this thread suggests fewer planets.
I would also like to see a poll with the number of dwarf planets are (1,,,, 8,,,, 12)
There are 4 gas giant planets, no doubt.
So there are three kinds of planets in our solar system; dwarfs, terrestrial and jovian.
But I think its wrong to say earth is not a planet because its not a jovian planet.
Still, Pluto is a kind of planet, it’s a dwarf planet.
currently, "pluto doesn't count" is at 44%. votes for 9 or more planets totals in at 56%. But as a single poll choice "pluto doesn't count" wins the plurality by a large margin. Interesting

well what about the slippery slope theory?

We first eliminate Pluto, and then later we will want to eliminate Mercury - Mars, which means we no longer live on a planet.

What's next? We then eliminate Saturn, Uranus and Neptune leaving only Jupiter?

Finally, even Jupiter will get axed leaving only the Sun, and we all know that's a STAR, or so we thought.. and if that one gets removed then there's nothing left! It's the end of Days...

Sorry Leo, but we can't use your theory. It will lead to Armageddon and who knows what else.

"Still, Pluto is a kind of planet, it’s a dwarf planet."

Thanks for the update on the classifications. Actually I had read that and forgotten Pluto actually does remain, technically, a dwarf planet.

Seriously, I think they made the right call with removing it as a major planet in the same group as the others, especially considering that its smaller than our own moon... and this generation is the only one that has to get (a very little) annoyed about the change change of status while the future generations gets to learn about our Solar System without exceptions getting in the way of science. And so this small change helps keep science consistent and logical the way it Should Be.

It would have been nice had Geography taken a back step and decided to call Europe/Asia a single continent.

right, it intersects Neptune, plus Pluto and Charon orbit each other. Charon isn't a true moon of pluto.
