One of the famous slope dark streaks on Mars might be visible in a 3-D Hirise image of Gusev.
A cropped image showing the feature is attached taken from this 3-D image:

http://marsunearthed.com/MRO/MRO_Anaglyphs/MRO_040/MRO040_3D2.GIF

Anyone able to tell the position of Spirit in this image?

Bob Clark

Hi Bob.

Just waited for your image to be approved, to be able to provide you with an answer.

MER A Spirit is not within the area, that you have shown.

That dark streak is interesting. More likely a dust devil streak, but
seems very wide in relation to its width.

Interesting.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. It was extremely large with respect to the overall size of Io and crescent shaped. It seemed unbelievable that something that big had not been visible before". Linda Morabito on discovering that the Jupiter moon Io was volcanically active. This image shows Spirit was close to the area where the dark streak appears when it was at West Spur. However, there is a smaller hill that might have blocked view of the streak when it was at West Spur:

"An inner basin among the Columbia Hills may contain the layered deposits Spirit has been seeking. Spirit should reach the spot named West Spur by June 1. The rover will most likely remain there for about a week to study outcrops and rocks in the area...."
http://www.astronomy.com/asy/objects/images/ch_500.jpg

Taken from:

New views of Mars
Rover scientists begin to unravel the geological mysteries of the martian landing sites.
Andrew Fazekas
May 25, 2004
http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=a&id=2064

Spirit now however is further away near Home Plate.

Bob Clark

Judging from the route map, Spirit never went up that particular slope.
But your question raises an interesting possibility. I remember it did climb some slope and there were some panoramas taken at the high point. Perhaps the streak could have been visible at that high point.

Bob Clark

I'll have a look through the Raw images & see if I can find any.

I need to figure out when that could have been.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
