So that we don't clutter up the Frances thread with storm stories, post them here.
I'm fortunate to live in Barbados, rather than any of the islands further north or west - we're just a little too far south and east to be in the main hurricane belt. That's not to say that we don't still get the occasional storm - in the last few years we've had a couple of tropcial storms, but the last direct hurricane hit was Janet back in 1955.
When we do get hit though they tend to go on and do major damage elsewhere: Glibert, Hugo and Charley all passed here as tropical depressions or minor storms for example.

Barbados? that sound really nice, look out, Betelgeuse is looking at islands ATM
With your knowledge, i thought you must've worked with SG.

Sorry for the off topic post

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

>Sorry for the off topic post...
Hmm...an off topic post in the off-topic post thread! Cool. Yeah, I saw Betel on the hunt for islands, I'm warning him now, we've never been invaded (fought off the French and the British) so he can try if he wants - I'm not scared!

Hey, while i'm at it. In hindsight, would there have been a better base for Nasa flight operations?
I'm thinking Hawaii for instance, more stable weather(?) closer to the equator, less aligators

Ohh, not to forget beautiful polynesian girls.

Land mass and transport would be issues, i suppose.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver

Guam might be better - it's closer to the equator. For non-US possessions, Guyana or Barbados would be good: Guyana has the land mass, Barbados the position (nothing to the East or North East for over 3 000 miles).

In reply to:

Guam might be better - it's closer to the equator.

Or Hawaii, which has the bonus of being an actual state, which might make the political side a bit easier to navigate. The selection of Cape Canaveral was as much political as practical, really.

But Guam, Hawaii and all other islands have the fundamental problem of being islands. It's just harder to get all the neccesary stuff there.

But it could happen. After all, Orbital Sciences has used Kwajalein Atoll as the base for at least one Pegasus launch. (For those not in the know, Pegasus requires mostly just an airstrip long enough to accomodate a Lockheed Tristar, so it's pretty portable. The rocket actually gets dropped by a modified Tristar airliner, or a B-52 in the case of oversized payloads like the Hyper-X, and then ignited midair.) And Russia has for years been contemplating building an unmanned Soyuz launch complex on Christmas Island.

EDIT: But I'm getting way offtopci in this offtopic thread.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

I remember when Charlie was predicted to hit Tampa dead on and the residents headed east to Orlando. Guess where the hurricane went....to Orlando! I was talking to someone whose relative went to Orlando to ride out the storm and the person they stayed with lost their roof. Hopefully this storm will not follow those who are heading to the Lakeland/Tampa area!

Rocket, Shuttle_Guy, AI_Sci: stay safe ok?
