I never really knew why, but why does Uranus' rings circle vertically instead of horizontally like those of Saturn?

I'm not an expert on the solar system, but I do know that the spin axis of Uranus is actually almost perpendicular to its orbital axis about the sun. This is different from almost all other objects in the solar system, which seem to be spinning along the same axis as they orbit (and in the same sense, counter-clockwise when looking down at the north pole, as everything else). The rings themselves orbit about Uranus' equator, as do its moons more or less, so the rings are perpendicular to Uranus' orbital plane and we see them face on.

Why the Uranian system is tipped over is a bit of a mystery (as far as I know), but one possibility is that it had a collision with another planet-sized object early in its history. There's a pretty interesting discussion on the tilt Uranus, and some good images, at:
http://www.star.le.ac.uk/edu/Uranus.shtml

In 2007, Uranus will be having an Equinox. The rings & major moons will be edge on to us.

Uranus I think must have been knocked over whilst being formed, & therefore Uranus & the moons formed whilst tilted at this perculiar angle, unless Uranus was hit be something two or three times the mass of the Earth??

A recent Hubble Space Telescope view reveals Uranus surrounded by its four major rings and by 10 of its 17 known satellites. This false-color image was generated by Erich Karkoschka using data taken on August 8, 1998, with Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer. Hubble recently found about 20 clouds - nearly as many clouds on Uranus as the previous total in the history of modern observations.
The Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 was developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and managed by the Goddard Spaced Flight Center for NASA's Office of Space Science.

This image and other images and data received from the Hubble Space Telescope are posted on the World Wide Web on the Space Telescope Science Institute home page at URL http://oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Good link except I didn't see the image you were mentioning and the one you posted is still awaiting approval. I got drawn towards the Beta pic image and report on two dust discs but thats a subject for another thread.

Thanks for posting the link.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Matt Groening has revealed by the year 3000, astronomers

will have renamed Uranus to avoid juvenile discussions as

we have seen here.

The new name?

Urectum.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!
