Was it close to the horizon? It always looks more orange when if first rises, due to the thick layer of air it's light is shining through, which tends to scatter the bluish light and lets the reddish light through. If it was high in the sky, it's red color was caused by smoke or dust in the atmosphere, which does the same thing.

Lunar eclipses can also turn the moon a deep red, as it is illuminated entirely by light refracted through our atmosphere. Of course, this only happens with a full moon, so if the images you saw were crescents or half moons or gibbous, it could not have been an eclipse. Do you know when and where the images were taken, mzdimented?
