In rlb's "Nitro" thread, stevehw mentioned what a dramatic effect a massive nuclear exlplosion would have on earth's atmosphere, and I wondered if such a detonation would help relieve the atmospheric pressure. Steve kindly answered my query with this detailed post on issues of nuclear fusion and solar shielding, which has led me to some more questions I hope deserve a new thread:

Could we redirect a Near Earth Asteroid to hit Venus, and blow off some of its atmosphere? There's fodder for a Sci-Fi thriller, saving our planet and helping make Venus more habitable, all in one shot. Call Bruce Willis!

Seriously, would a major asteroid collision with Venus help our cause there?
Have we charted any potential Near Venus Asteroids?

thanks all

I'm a recovering optimist - things could be better.

The short answer is no. I think there are topics about this subject some where on here.

"Teller' threshhold for Venus is greatly in excess of 100 megatons due to higher air pressure for a surface blast. One could start the detonations higher in the atmosphere (if you want to do the nuclear version of your idea) and work your way down . . . . .

Gigaton yield anti-matter bombs at the surface might work.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!
