Lasers are getting powerful enough to do things like anti-heat-seeking-missile defense for military aircraft and even drone destruction to defend fixed facilities on the ground.

Some of the pulsed lasers designed for fusion reactor development are extremely powerful, too.

We are actually getting into the "ray gun" era.
