Hello all, have a question concerning this Hydrogen Fuel Sensor equipped to the External Tank. Someone, please enlighten me!
This Hydrogen Fuel Sensor is supposed to shut of the shuttles engines if the ET begins to run low on fuel, so as not to burn out the engines. My question is, what would happen if in fact the ET was running low on fuel and the Sensor did shut off the engines? It seems to me that the crew aboard the shuttle might be in a bit of a predicament: here they are strapped to an enormous External Tank with no upward thrust. That spells trouble.
I know the folks at NASA wouldn't put a device aboard the shuttle that would shut down it's engines if it could not safely return to the ground, but my question is: what takes place to keep the shuttle from falling out of the sky?
