" we are going back to the moon, china is saying they will be there by 2017"<br /><br />China is NOT saying they are going to the Moon by 2017. One Chinese scientist who is NOT part of the Chinese Space program leadership mentioned that in a publication that is nothing more than a tabloid with little credibility inside China. Claiming China is going to the Moon by 2017 is like claiming the USA is going to Mars by 2017 because of something Zurbin said in a National Enquirer story.<br /><br />

so there is no space race developing between the usa, china, and private industry? 100,000,000 dollars will buy you a trip around the moon. scientist want telescopes on the moon. defense anylist want everything from spy equipement to metor busters. hotels, amusement parks and restruants see new entertainment venue. they say all the concret we need is on the moon. and i have heard about something called an h3 molecule. with all that going on i think the united states needs a mobile permant place in space to operate from in lue of future expectations?

"so there is no space race developing between the usa, china, and private industry?"<br /><br />No, concepts of manned exploration are increasing, but it isn't anything remotely like the Space Race was.<br /><br />

Sounds like you want a CEV plus a hab plus a Earth return stage (like an Earth departure stage but for the other end). I would think these would start being fleshed out after CEV first flights but before CEV luna flights so in about ten years. Bigelow has some ideas about what he would like to see.

A practical solar system exploration vessel in the 4000 ton size category has already been designed.<br /><br /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><font color="#ff0000"><strong>TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!</strong></font></p><p><font color="#339966"><strong>So many people, so few recipes !!</strong></font></p><p><font color="#0000ff"><strong>Let's clean up this stinkhole !!</strong></font> </p> </div>

Or get strung up before launch by the lynch mob that intends to avoid getting irradiated.<br /><br />

Perhaps our best bet is an ion engine or equivelent. We have flown sucessfully some with about one pound of thrust. Bigger may fly soon. Faster ejection mass (0.99999c is theroretically possible) will allow the craft to change speed and direction many times before it needs to be "refueled" with more ejection mass. Neil

You can always trust Dobbins the cynic:<br />"Claiming China is going to the Moon by 2017 is like claiming the USA is going to Mars by 2017 because of something Zurbin said in a National Enquirer story. "<br /><br />I would believe that the US won't make it to Mars, but Zubrin-talk only means that private industry is likely to beat the US govt there.<br /><br />
