Hi folks,

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close down the Space forums, effective July 17th. This decision was not made lightly, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the community over the years. Thank you for being a part of this journey. The closure of the forums does not affect the Editorial side of things and the blogs will continue to bring you all the latest space exploration, innovation and astronomy news.

Space.com forums had a great run from about 1998 to about 2012. Even despite their horrible decision to install the Pluck forum software (which they retracted after a couple of years back to something more reasonable). It's been a long time, I don't recall the exact years. Space.com forums used to be super popular, was even a top-1000 website back around the year 2000 in visits.

I had been one of their frequent posters, especially in the hard sciences area. Some of the you who had returned may remember me.

Then one day, to everyone's surprise, around 2012 or so, space.com suddenly decided to shut down their forums and pluck everyone, with no notice.

Several years later, they decided to restart their space.com forums. After the horrible treatement by SDC,
I never came back.

Anyways, many of the old SDC members had moved over to the 'port, the first time SDC that shut down. Welcome to try it out! https://thespaceport.us/forum/

I'll have to look at spaceport. Thanks

My astronomical heart was rekindled when the Bad Astronomy board became active. It merged with Universe Today and now it is the Cosmoquest Forum.

What other astronomy forums are out there?

What more can I add? I am mortified.
I have set up a forum: http://hyperspace.freeforums.net

I am unlikely to find the time to run it properly, but maybe some would volunteer to help. I have made one post myself re Special Relativity as a starting thread.
The use of AI will be accepted, but only as a summary of the project, unless the administrator(s) approve of more detail. :)
Moderators needed (if there are any posts in addition to mine:rolleyes:

Maybe we could find a rogue AI to kidnap this forum and put it somewhere on some dark server.

Do they have forums on the dark side?

What does the editorial side of things mean? And where are the blogs?

What are the choices for this space junky diaspora?

Where do the square people go? Where do the sphere people go?

Maybe an AI could secretly invade the 'Moderator Class'.

I think it's about cost. Advertising Revenue is down on the floor due to too few participating members against high costs from filling the forum with reams of copy!

Membership £10/year would even things out. Plus a charge of $/£1 for every post more than 100 words.o_O

Thank you space.com, sorry to see you go.
Only the forum isn't it? You will still be able to monitor cosmologists' efforts to understand the universe, but without any comment in the Space.com forum. At least that is my understanding.

Maybe we could set up a system whereby all Space.com admin posts were automatically copied to my/anyone's free forum, and things could carry on as normal, but perhaps with stricter moderation based on some, as yet, undefined criteria. Maybe a small panel on controversial posts in an openly readable thread. Could be fun!

AND a special section for the mysterious things, e.g. 20,000-year-old Earth Civilisation and special nonsense(?) like remote viewing because hordes love that sort of stuff. Yes, charge them $/month (Netflix make it work) so we make money from their comments:eek::cool::mad::oops::rolleyes:;)

AND we could have a special subject: "Idiots Corner" where the panel decide to dump silly posts (for a laugh)

Perhaps Bill Gates would pay a few hundred grand to make the above happen on the basis that it provided therapy for the 'unheard' herd. As well as subjects like Cosmology we could include other subjects like the banned p-lo-ics divided into those outstanding in the news

Musk might be the better shot at it, so instead of having an ex-Space.com (formus), it might be something close to SpaceX.com. He might buy it just for this quip. ;)

Also, COLGeek, I assume each blog will allow conversations. Is this correct?

I honestly don't know how this will work upon forum closure.

There is a different article feedback mechanism in place on the homepage. It uses a different account login than you use here on the forums.

This only allows comments on that specific article. No user generated topics, like in the forums. I would assume that will continue.
