AP-Space Station (Tops)

Astronauts finish spacewalk on international space station

SPACE STATION ALPHA (AP) - It was a successful mission for an
American and a Russian astronaut, who completed a four-and-a-half
hour spacewalk on the international space station.
They were doing maintenance on the orbiting outpost and
installing new equipment needed for a new line of cargo ships that
come off the assembly line next year.
Midway into the spacewalk, flight controllers accidentally shut
down their communication link, leaving the two space travelers
completely on their own.
Once the problem was detected, a backup line was established,
before the main link was reconnected.
Before the Columbia shuttle disaster of 2003, there were enough
astronauts to ensure that one remained in the spacecraft at all
times. But, since then, the two-man crew has been going out in
space, leaving flight controllers in Moscow and Houston to monitor
the space station.

(Copyright 2004 by The Associated Press.
