Star Trek

I really enjoyed the original Star Trek TV series and the follow-on movies. Basically, these dramas inspired wishful thinking, fresh unique ideas for technology, and a desire to learn in detail about physics, Astronomy, the Universe and possible space travel by humans. Sadly, the current state of our physics knowledge, and our limited technology is the "cold water" of reality writ large. However, the concept of converting energy into human food, (of one's choice no less), now seems the sine qua non for any manned long term space exploration as well as an immediate solution to the pressing problem of Earth's regions which experience hunger. Such a concept is thanks to Star Trek. Is such doable or just a dream? I hoping for the former.
