I guess the "stick" a.k.a. the "CLV" a.k.a. "Aeres I" is not all that new of an idea.

http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/satint05.htm

I never realized that as far back as the 60s NASA was considering a Saturn variant with a completely solid first stage. They even reached the point of testing a 260 solid motor--the largest rocket motor ever fired. Kind of boggles the mind.

I've seen that article before, but didn't read far enogh into it to read that they actually built and fired the thing. I just thought it was a paper study... They wanted to attach four of them as strapons to a Saturn V at one stage. Would have created a Sea Dragon sized launch vehicle.
