Without giving anything away....

Some nice special effects and visuals in the first 2/3 of the movie at least made the preposterous plot palatable. Unfortunately the utter ridiculousness/randomness of the final 1/3 of the movie pretty much ruined any good will I had.

Others feel the same?

It hasn't been released here in the states yet.

Your opinion seems to be in the majority, which makes me sad. I'm still going to see it, however. I hear the music is incredible!

This has been discussed on a couple of other threads:

Sunshine(2007)

and

Upcoming Movie Thread

I missed it at the cinema unfortunately, so must wait until it comes out on DVD to see it.

It kind of reminds me of Solaris (recent remake). I saw it because it's by the same people that made 28 Days Later (one of my favourite movies).

-pyoko the duck

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

The basic scenario of a Q-Ball shutting down a large stars core is possible, but not for Sol...it's too small to 'catch' one.

A Q-Ball is a non-topological soliton and one possible dark matter component that could be involved in the production of 'normal' matter after the big bang. It's as yet not confirmed, but CERN is hoping to change that.

One problem with the scenario is that if the suns core were shut down we wouldn't know about it for a very long time, as in 10,000 - 170,000 years more or less. That's the latest NASA guesstimate of how long it takes photons to travel from the core to the surface.

In reply to:

If the core shut down suddenly, the sun would implode. If it shut down gradually, gravitational contraction would cause the sun to shrink. We'd know!

Neutrino production would cease immediately, but the laws of thermodynamics would still apply so the core would cool much slower than you'd think due to the residual heat (initially 13,600,000 K/27,000,000 F), mass (40% of the suns total) and density (160 g cu/cm, 10x that of lead).

Yes, there might be 'starquakes' but not a rapid collapse. Not immediately.

Yes - the core science doesn't make sense as it relates to the SDC forum. But it was mostly, a sincere effort to include the technicals [as opposed to what one normally sees, which is a complete gloss-over].

I also like that they kept the special effects to a minimum, except for the ending which were a bit much for me. I'm also still trying to figure out why they even included any mention of Capt. Pinbacker in this script - other than to use him as a plot devise.

So I'd definately recommend this. Remember, boys & girls, the usual drivel that passes for sci-fi - and that this is not the usual drivel.

Its also interesting how this film is being released. I actually saw this movie in a theatre which is known for art-house fare. They initially opened in just 10 theatres US-wide, but I read where this week they are planning on showing in 500 theatres.

My chief criticism: why was it a manned mission? Something like this begs for multiple drones, which would be much simpler and provide greater redundancy.

When you say arthouse, I image an old decrepid cinema. They certainly are around here.

I hope the sound system was up to the job.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. "Art House" here (SE Michigan) means a theater that plays a lot of independently produced and foreign films, and many of those are the finest theaters in the region; definitely not the multiplexes

http://www.landmarktheatres.com/Market/Detroit/MainArtTheatre.htm

http://www.landmarktheatres.com/Market/Detroit/MapleArtTheatre.htm

plus a host of others.

In Detroits Theater District there are some real jewels including The Fox Theater, a restored beauty that is the 2nd largest theater in the US.

Interior image below.

Yes - this is one of those traditional old-time, but restored, large round-ish type theatres. something that could just as easily pass for mid-to-small sized live music theatre or even playhouse.

The buyers who restored this structure insisted on restoring to original specs, insisted on not turning the place into a multi-plex and further insisted on not simply playing large-scale blockbusters. They kept the quality high and unfortunately had to hold out for a good 5 or 6 years to get any substantial return. The concept they came up with is interesting. The used the restored movie theatre as an anchor tenant for a strip mall development. And fortunately this isn't as bad as it sounds, although, sadly - there is a Starbucks.

No way around the old Art / Commerce divagation [check with Dragon04 on whether I used this word in the right context].

Nice, anywhere around here that shows indie films is generally a dive.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring" - Chuck Palahniuk.
