I don't recall April ever being mentioned in the Series. Was this from one of the Trek novels? That would make the original Enterprise even older.

I remember reading a book called "The Making of Star Trek", written sometime in the 1970s. This book mentioned some of the names considered for the captain before Kirk was finally picked. April and Pike were on this list, as was Cook and a few others.

The info at IMDb {LINK} also shows that Leonard Nimoy will be appearing as Spock along with Zachary Quinto. Perhaps what we will be seeing for the movie will be memories of Spock of the get-together as he is reaching the end of his life.

Matter of fact since Kirk had a pretty hectic career prior to becoming the youngest captain in starfleet history and getting the Enterprise, I can only assume that any academy references are going to be short flashbacks.

And just because "Bones" is older that Kirk doesn't mean he didn't go through at the same time as Kirk - he could have joined later in life or been drafted into the medical corps, I think there is some reference to this but don't remember, during the Klingon wars while Kirk was coming up through the academy.

However I think IIRC that Bones met Kirk after the USS Farragut incident, when it was nearly destroyed when Kirk first came across the blood-sucking cloud.

But like I said, they can retcon the history to what eever they feel like.

{By the Gods - I sound like a trekkie}

according to the books - April was the first captain immediately after construction and George Kirk, James T's father, was the head of Security - IIRC James Kirk as a youngster was on that first mission, dragged on board by his father to see the new ship when they got sent out in a hurry, which made him go into the academy.

Hmmm...I always thought Kirk had originally been assigned to the Republic, then the Farragut, and then eventually the Enterprise.

Cool pic though. Can anyone kluge some treknology to explain why the turbofan spinny things? I know you can see this effect just behind the translucent hemispheres on the front of the warp nacelles in TOS, but I never understood exactly what they were supposed to do.

v3k

Probably some version of the Bussard Collectors, which suck in various interstellar gases for some engine based purpose. They used it as a plot device in TNG once.

Doug,

Just to answer your question, (if you did not know the book inferred to), the book was named "Best Destiny." The end of this book also caused Jim to change his life around and get to be the youngest person ever to be admitted into the SFA. This being because his father died mysteriously on the mission.

But it was also, I found, one of the hardest ones to read of the series, (can't really say why), and I don't think I ever did finish it to the end. But all this info is just FYI, because "books" take a back seat to cannon around here. [Really tried NOT to put any emotion into this reply.]

Doug,

One other thot about why Jimmy was hauled aboard the ship in Best Destiny, would you believe he was a punky leader of some friends and caused him and his friends to be stowed away on a ocean ship just because of a dare? (Or something to that effect.) The authorities caught him and were really going to put him in trouble, if something radical was not done.

Sounds like he just re-directed his flustrations (?) to other directions, doesn't it?

I've got the book somewhere in my collection, which is why I vaguely remembered the plotline, just haven't picked it up in a while.

I'm hoping that since the canon dates for the WWIII and the Eugenic wars have come and gone and Kirk's gold-bling cell phone has become a reality in the 20th century, that the entire Star Trek universe gets re-written, even without smooth-head Klingons. Maybe even transporter tech can be re-worked into something more real-world science friendly. Remember, the old story was based on 1960's projections.

Thinking of sci-fi physics, they could be some type of spinning magnetic generation for the Bussard Ramscoops

I read (I think it was AICN) that the nacelles are beefier, the bite out of the lower section is deeper and in general the ship has a more "organic" look. I guess the inevitable toy will be more ergonomic for me to hold as I spin around in my chair!
