I recall reading somewhere that there were small diamonds formed near the explosion area, it that right?

Indeed there were. Hi Andrew <br /><br />Shock diamonds have been reported from urelites and are destinct from primordial diamonds that are of intersetellar grains. Hi Jon,<br /><br />Thanks for your answer.<br /><br />The urelites IIRC, are from the impacting body?<br /><br />AFAIK, when Meteor Crater formed, the area apparently was covered in grasslands with <br />pockets of Pine Forest. Very different from the drier desert conditions of today.<br /><br />I was just wondering if the Carbon in living oranisms was compressed into diamond<br />during the impact event.<br /><br />Mind you, the amounts involved would have been minimal compared to the carbon <br />contained within the impactor.<br /><br />Another point, with Meteor Crater, I had seen somewhere that the <br />explosion was about 150 Hiroshimas (150 x 15 Kilotonnes = 3.831 Megatonnes).<br />That cannot be nearly enough surely???<br /><br />Andrew Brown. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><font color="#000080">"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Hi Andrew<br /><br />It is my understanding that the urellite diamonds are from collisons in space.<br /><br />With respect to Meteor Ctrater the bedrock is limestone. Lots of carbon there. The impacting body was an iron, so had no carbon.<br /><br />Nearly four megatonnes is a lot of energy. Clearly enough to generate transient pressures.
