UK should 'reverse astronaut ban'

The UK should rethink its policy ban on astronauts, a report written for the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) says.

The report warns Britain risks being isolated on the international stage if it continues its longstanding refusal to fund the human exploration of space.

The RAS expert panel says the cost of joining other nations with astronaut programmes could be some £150m a year. More

W00T , excellent news. Although I think that we can gat a lot done with probes its good to see that the UK might be interested in the development of manned space travel as well. I hope this means that we’re going to sign up for Aurora, even if there is still a lot of lobbying to do.

Perhaps the UK ban on astronautics has at least one possible benefit:

There is no motivation for adapting the ghastly British food for space flight.

Is there any doubt that a freeze dried packet of creamed eels, when exposed to the mysterious space environment, might mutate into something grotesque when re-hydrated?

And what of haggis in space?

The mind (and stomach) reel!

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Yep, no UK science money can be used to fund astronauts, thanks to Mrs Thatcher for that one

Horray.

Although I would rather like the 150million per year going into a number of beagle-esq missions. Perhaps a british probe or 2 every year, with the cost of the launcher included.

But I don't see how they could sell to the public the need for an extra 150million in tax. They couldn't even say that this was really being put back into the british economy, after all how many space companies are located in britain and have something to do with any manned programme? Although this may inspire some start up companies.
Well you can knock me over with a feather...

I've been following Human Space Flight for 45 years and I never knew British astronauts were banned.

Strange.
yeah that would be great, Beagle 2 was such a successful mission, would hate to see them "waste" that money on sending a person in Space.....
Don't let your sig line incite a gay thread ;>)

I don't really think of Beagle 2 as a mission. Beagle 2 was but a small set of instruments built with spare change that hitched a ride on the Mars Express mission. The failure of Beagle 2 is akin to the failure of say one gyro on Hubble, or maybe one of Spirit's cameras. Nothing more. Mars Express on the other hand, has been a highly successful mission.

Really, I though you had to become a US citizen to join NASA in the way Foale has.

Dual Nationality I believe.

But then he wasn't the first British citizen into space. Helen Sharman went up with the Russians.

I'd love Britian to cough up more money for the ESA Both for Manned and Un-Manned space flight.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. I think this time the Brits want to fly in new hardware flying to the moon and mars...

Yes there will be no need for a British meal selection on CEV. They can eat beefstew with rice... HAHA!!!

Anyways on the subject I think it is a prestige thing not just the wealth of gold and silver and gems from the moon and mars.

Plus the Brits can say they landed on the moon... Why do I have a funny feeling the first moon landing since Apollo era will be 2 Americans, a Brit and a guy from Japan????

Well I don't think they will be flying a Klipper to the moon, land and come back after a week or two holiday....

IIRC Helen received no UK government funding for her flight, she was sponsored by various companies. In a way the Juno project was a forerunner of the current tourist flights.

I've very sketchy memories of the whole thing so I've looked her up. For those that don't know...

http://www.made-in-sheffield.com/People/helenSharman.htm
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring.
